When I was a kid I remember seeing this listed in my printed  copy of the Guinness Book. It was supposed to be the fastest production car. I doubt it was either.

Considering the AM Vantage of similar vintage  was the fastest production 4 seater at 170mph, and this had the same engine and almost certainly better aero, “fastest” may well be plausible . “Production”, not so much.

Though given AM’s volumes and level of hand building at the time, “we made 1” may have counted as “ production” in their eyes. It certainly would have at Bristol.

The part I doubt, other than the “production” claim, is that they actually did a top speed test with it. They may have looked at what the Vantage did and made an estimate based on that , or they may have just pulled a number out of their asses. Top speed claims back then were pretty unreliable.

See now you’re you’ve gone and made me curious. And we all know what rabbit holes getting curious on the internet leads down :-(

According to Wikipedia, it did a verified 197mph at MIRA in 1979.

According to a Drivetribe article (yes I know, not really an authority, but others say the same thing) the fastest production car of the 197 0s was the Ferrari BB GT4 at 175mph.

So if we ignore the minor “production” detail, it sounds like a valid claim. Give or take what fettling they had to do to hit that s peed, but as you say, everyone was at it. A nd Ferrari was one of the main culprits, so you’d have to take the BB number with some salt too.

I think Ferrari and Lamborghini were the worst offenders when it came to top speed shenanigans .
